The NetBench file server benchmark can guide you through the process of evaluating servers for your business needs.
The NetBench benchmark measures system throughput. To determine relative file server performance, you should also measure CPU utilization. The following NetBench and CPU utilization measurements show that AlphaServer systems keep on running and provide more throughput and extra CPU cycles over the Intel system.
If your objective is to support a large number of clients or to combine your file and print services with another application, Digital's AlphaServer family offers you the best solution on the market. For approximately the same price as an Intel server, the AlphaServer systems provide the price/performance leadership, reliability, and the best warranty in the business.
NetBench V3.0, a portable DOS-based benchmark program from Ziff-Davis, allows you to measure, analyze, and predict how well your server can handle file requests from PCs.
NetBench runs on one or more PC clients connected to a file server. Each PC client records the number of bytes it moves to and from the server during the test and how long it takes to move them. At the end of the test, the number of bytes each PC client moved is divided by the number of seconds. This results in the throughput per client. NetBench then collects all the client throughput scores, adds them together, and reports this as the overall server throughput score.
