A: Internet North currently operates 2 modem pools; 14.4K and 28.8K. If you have a 28.8k modem, set your dialing program to connect to (403) 873-9914. By the way (BTW), the 14.4K modem number is (403) 873-6222. If you are calling locally from Yellowknife, there is no need for the (403).
A: Try setting your baud rate at 19200bps (for 14.4K modems), or 38400bps (for 28.8K modems). You should also contact your phone company to verify that you can use a 14400bps or 28800 modem on your telephone line. When operating at a faster port speed than your modem's carrier rate (ie: 14.4K), make sure that you have hardware flow control enabled on your dialer software and your modem.
A: You'll probably be disconnected.
Q: I can't get my dialer to dial the modem. I go to the dialer menu, pick connect and it just sits there. Now what?
A: If you have any fax software running, close it and try again. In Windows, only one program can access the modem so if your fax software is running, you will have a problem.
A: If you have an external modem, make sure it is turned on and that the cable is plugged into the back of it.
A: Verify that your modem is on the proper COM port.
A: You don't have a static IP address. Each time you call and connect to Internet North, your IP address depends on the answering modem. Each Internet North modem has a preassigned IP address. If you would like to find our your IP address, access our Customer Service section on the web.
A: Make sure you're not running any fax software.
A: Try a new initialization string. They’re at the back of this appendix.
A: Make sure your caps lock key isn't on... Usernames and passwords are case sensitive.
A: Use the same password which you use when you're logging in.
Q: When I try to check my mail, my program says "UNABLE TO ACCESS MAILBOX - IS ANOTHER SESSION ACTIVE?"
A: Your modem probably dropped it's Internet connection while you were checking your eMail. Just try back in a few minutes.
A: Try accessing the site again. This is a known bug with Netscape.
A: Try accessing www.internorth.com. If you can't connect to this address, your Internet connection has probably dropped and you should reboot your computer and connect again.
A: If you still can't access the remote site, but can access www.internorth.com, their remote site is currently down or unreachable... Try again later.
A: If you want to download the file, tell Netscape to save the file to disk.
A: Delete some files from your hard disk, save the files onto a different disk or purchase an additional hard drive.
A: Some sites are very busy and can't handle a large number of connections. Try connecting to the site at a different hour of the day, when there may be less people accessing it.

Q: This slip account is slloooww compared to a BBS or a host account which I used to use.
A: Because a SLIP or PPP account is graphical, you can’t compare it to the screens which you would get from a host\shell or BBS account. With a SLIP or PPP account, not only does your modem affect the speed, but so does the amount of available memory as well as the speed of your computer (486, Pentium, etc.) and the speed of your video card.
Q: I have a 28.8k modem. Why can I only connect at 14.4k speeds?
A: Make sure that your port speed is set correctly for your modem. If you use a 14.4K modem, your port speed should be 19200. If you use a 28.8K modem, your port speed should be 38400. If you use a 33.6K modem, your port speed should be 57600. Due to the fact that the PPP (point to point) protocol uses it's own compression techniques, setting a port speed of 115200 on your modem will sometimes overflow your modem buffer and cause a slower throughput when accessing the Internet.
Q: My modem will only connect at 9600bps and I have a 14.4K (or 28.8K) modem. What now?
Q: What happens if an extension phone is picked up while I'm using the Internet?
